Hollyford Track Freedom Walkers Transport
The Hollyford Track is open again as of 20 December 2020! But you do have to walk an extra 3km.
The Hollyford Track is a spectacular Fiordland tramp from the mountains deep in the National Park to the sea at Martins Bay, and can be walked all year round. What happens if the weather is bad?
We ask you wait at the Hollyford Valley Walks/Fly Fiordland Air strip from 10.30 am onwards. The strip is signposted and is a 1 hour walk East from the Martins Bay DOC Hut. Please wait at the northern end of the airstrip on the picnic table and stay away from the Guided Walkers Lodge. If the weather is bad and the plane does not show by 1.00 pm then return to the Martins Bay hut and the flight will be rescheduled for the following day. It is common for the flights to be delayed due weather but it is very unusual that we cannot get the flight done. Cancelled days only happen once or twice per year. Usually the guided walkers will communicate this but its not a given. If you do not have an inreach we recommend you hire a mountain radio for both safety and ease of communication. These can be hired for $55 per week from Stew Burnby in Te Anau, phone 021 612 061. http://www.mountainradio.co.nz/bookings.html
Fly to Big Bay, only works if low tide is around mid morning. This is an extra $75 for the plane, 1-5 people.
Consider a fly in to Cascade and a pickup from Martins bay doing the coastal walk staying Huts at Barn Bay, Gorge river, Big bay and Martins Bay.
You do need to camp one night between Gorge River and Big Bay.
More information about the track can be found in the DOC www.doc.govt.nz
